Pet Emergency Preparedness: What to Include in Your Pet’s Emergency Kit

Pet Emergency Preparedness

When an emergency happens, being prepared can make all the difference for your pet’s safety and well-being. Whether it’s a sudden illness, storm, or accident, a pet emergency kit ensures you have what you need to act fast.

At the Veterinary Emergency Referral Center (VERC), we’re committed to helping pet owners stay ready for anything. Below is a complete list of what to pack in your pet’s emergency kit and how to keep it up to date.

🩺 Health & Identification Essentials

In an emergency, quick access to your pet’s health records and identification details can be lifesaving. Include:

  • Pet medical and vaccine history

  • Medications and dosage instructions

  • Your primary veterinarian’s contact information

  • Emergency vet contact information (VERC – open 24/7 for emergency care)

  • Basic pet information: name, breed, age, microchip number, and identifying features

  • A recent photo of your pet

📍 Tip: Keep copies of these records in a waterproof folder or save digital copies on your phone for quick access.

🧰 First-Aid Supplies for Pets

A small first-aid kit can help stabilize minor injuries before you reach a veterinarian. Pack:

  • Gauze pads and adhesive tape

  • Cotton balls or swabs

  • Ice pack

  • Disposable gloves

  • Scissors and tweezers

  • Over-the-counter antibiotic ointment

  • Oral syringe

  • Mild liquid dish soap (to clean wounds or remove toxins)

  • Towels and a blanket

  • Alcohol wipes

  • Styptic powder (to stop minor bleeding)

  • Saline solution

🥣 Food, Water & Comfort Items

Plan for at least two weeks of basic supplies:

  • Pet food and water (rotate every few months to keep it fresh)

  • Travel food and water bowls

  • Extra leash, collar, and carrier

  • Familiar items like a favorite toy or blanket to help reduce stress

💡 Additional Pet Emergency Kit Tips

  • Store your kit in a waterproof, easy-to-grab container.

  • Review and restock supplies every 6–12 months.

  • Keep a smaller travel version in your car for on-the-go emergencies.

  • Add any special care items if your pet has unique health needs.
